This 1962 building, used as a water testing site by Southern Water, is covered by a concrete roof that includes a striking and unique domed glazing block feature. With the existing asphalt coverings and concrete glazing features reaching the end of their serviceable lifespan in terms of waterproof integrity, it was necessary to explore a solution to extend the lifespan of the roof.
Stringent health and safety requirements also needed to be managed because of the nature of the building’s operations.
The challenges presented by the complexity of this refurbishment project centred around the following key areas:
- A solution that could fully encapsulate the concrete/glazing block roof lights while retaining the passing of light into the interior of the building. The large dome features a total of 272 individual circular glass blocks.
- The building walls extending up through the parapet walls were suffering from condensation issues and trapped moisture.
- The need for the works to comply with the strict health, safety and environmental
challenges associated with working on a live water utility environment.
Using a combination of experience and innovative approaches, Williams Roofing
Contractors Ltd working with Polyroof provided a solution that far exceeded the client’s expectations.
