When Covid-19 first hit the UK, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust urgently needed isolation wards to treat sick and highly infectious patients.
ModuleCo, who have worked with NHS Trusts for over 20 years delivering modular buildings, set about the challenge of designing and constructing a ten-bed isolation ward for the Trust in only eight weeks. This would set a new benchmark in off-site construction timescales for these complex facilities. The fully-fitted units are constructed within a factory setting, then delivered and connected on-site to create a fully-operational ward.
To ensure delivery within such a short timeframe, ModuleCo had to rely on the experience of their suppliers. SIG Design & Technology have worked with ModuleCo on a number of projects specifying single-ply membranes for the module roofing. SIG’s specification manager, Ian Hayward, instantly recommended IKO Armourplan single ply. Manufactured in the UK, SIG are exclusive distributors for the membrane which Ian knew would be available.
One of the advantages of working with SIG is the availability of products through their nationwide network of branches. SIG Roofing Birmingham were able to ring-fence stock and arrange deliveries to the factory.
When it came to the installation, SIG-accredited contractors Harold Jones Roofing and Roofworx were more than happy to help. Knowing the importance of this project, they were able to shuffle their jobs around to make sure they could get into the factory when required.
Once completed, the units were delivered on-site and the roofing contractors hot-air-welded a 200 mm wide strip of Armourplan P across the roofing joint to create a fully-waterproofed unit.
From order to completion in only eight weeks! These isolation units have shown how successful a project can be when working together and trusting expert advice.
