YOUNG TALENT LEARNING TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES

The dome on this private dwelling in Tidworh had come to the end of its life. It required a new oak timber substrate, which was fixed in vertical planks to bend the curve–and then covered with 0.6mm Tecu-copper–each section being cut and tapered to shape on-site.

Using templates of the roof structure the copper was then curved—this was undertaken in a traditional manner by stretching and shrinking the copper on both upstands.

Utilising this method with the working of the panel on the upstands only.

This project utilising traditional techniques and skills provided an excellent opportunity for the training of young tradesmen working with complex shapes.
