Camden Lock Village is a 50,000 sqm mixed-use development of eight new buildings between three and nine storeys in height in the heart of Camden Town in North London. Located beside the Regent’s Canal, the scheme features retail units, cafes, restaurants and a cinema in addition to the 195 residential properties—a number of which were designated for affordable housing. Camden Lock Village has created 9,175 sqm of employment space including areas designated for small office and workshop use.
In collaboration with supply chain partner BEMO, Prater was responsible for the design development and installation of the standing seam metal roofing on two of the buildings. The stepped profile of the roofs were designed to match the building on the other side of the canal and help integrate the new development with the surrounding architecture. The roof also had to meet the specified thermal efficiency (U-value) and sound transmission levels. The BEMO system selected for this project was designed to minimise thermal bridging and deliver the required levels of soundproofing.
Prater also installed hot-melt and liquid waterproofing systems on seven of the new buildings. As one of the buildings featured a green roof it was important that a system was selected that could meet the specific waterproofing demands of this type of roof. In consultation with main contractor Mace and supply chain partner Radmat Building Products, the Radmat PermaQuik hot-melt system was selected. The seamless, flexible system with self-healing properties is British Board of Agrément (BBA) certified for green roof applications. The roof featured grass sedum and wildflowers as well as planters, concrete paving and other hard landscaping. Prater also installed a Radmat Paraflex liquid applied cold resin membrane system to waterproof the balconies of the residential properties.
One of the key challenges of the project was its close proximity to the Regent’s Canal and both the underground and national rail infrastructure. Because of this, space on site was limited and access for deliveries had to be planned carefully. It also required close collaboration with Network Rail and London Underground to ensure that operations could continue safely.
Karl Moxon at Prater commented: “This development is a key part of the ongoing regeneration of Camden Town and has created space for businesses and the local community as well as much needed residential space in this part of the capital. The size and complexity of this project meant that collaboration and communication throughout the supply chain was crucial to ensure the successful completion. At Prater, this is a fundamental part of our approach to every project and something we share with Mace as one our long term clients.”
