Roofing systems manufacturer BMI Redland has released an on-demand webinar, ‘Natural Slate and Slate Alternatives: A Specifier’s Guide’, designed to help architects, contractors and specifiers make informed choices when selecting slate roofing materials.
Presented by Mat Woodyatt, Product Manager at BMI Redland, the webinar delves into the heritage performance and specification of natural slate alongside the growing range of quality slate alternatives available today.
Natural slate remains one of the most distinctive and enduring materials on UK roofs, valued for its timeless appeal and longevity. However, Mat explains that achieving the right result involves more than just simply choosing a traditional product.
“Natural slate is a classic roofing material, but that doesn’t mean specification is straightforward,” Mat says.
“From sourcing and standards to workmanship and system design, there are a number of factors that can impact performance, appearance and cost over a roof’s lifetime.”
The webinar outlines what to consider when specifying natural slate or a slate alternative, including design suitability, structural and technical implications, sustainability and compliance with British Standards. It also introduces BMI’s 10-point checklist to help specifiers to get their slate roof specification right the first time.
Drawing on years of industry experience, Mat explores common pitfalls, the evolving role of alternative materials and the importance of responsible sourcing and manufacturer support in delivering a long-lasting, compliant roof system.
“There’s a growing demand for the traditional slate aesthetic, not only in heritage refurbishment but also across new-build developments,” Mat adds.
“This webinar provides practical insight into achieving that look, whether through natural or engineered materials.”
