RBM makes for a durable, reliable and cost-effective flat roof system that can resist fatigue, impacts and tears. Eclipse Roofing’s project, shortlisted at the UK Roofing Awards 2019, also showed that RBM can also be visually appealing.

This project, comprising two beautiful contemporary homes located on the coast required a waterproofing solution, robust enough to resist both poor coastal weather and damage from seagulls. However, set in the heart of Sandbanks in Poole, where houses are regularly sold for six and seven figure sums, the finish had to be flawless and pleasing to the eye. That was especially the case, since the roof areas are overlooked from multiple terraces.

The client Serene Projects and architect Trinity Associates, therefore, chose to use Reinforced Bituminous Membrane (RBM), which Eclipse Roofing and Waterproofing working with Soprema UK, delivered with great skill and workmanship.

Complexity

This project featured flat roofs of a modern and contemporary design, with various awkward and tight detailing on the terraces and the main roofs with a mix of plywood and concrete decks. The specification chosen to match complexity of this project, was a bituminous warm roof system comprising of a self-adhesive vapour barrier, 120mm PIR insulation board, a vented underlay and a slate grey mineral cap sheet. The colour of the cap sheet was chosen to match the skyline trim and facias, providing an attractive finish to the whole project once completed.

Workmanship

The complex project meant Eclipse Roofing & Waterproofing’s project management and installation skills were tested to the full. Careful planning was required when setting out the RBM system to ensure continuity with laps, head-laps, excellent detailing paramount to ensure the client received a visually stunning finish.

Eclipse Roofing & Waterproofing has delivered an aesthetically pleasing roof, with straight lines and neat continuous bituminous beads. The project highlights the robustness of an RBM specification and what can be achieved with careful planning and a highly skilled installation team.

Why RBM?

RBM flat roof systems are durable, reliable and cost-effective with excellent performance characteristics. Their elasticity, resistance to fatigue, impact and tear resistance, plus flexibility at low temperatures can guarantee a robust and watertight solution.

According to Shane Young, Managing Director of Eclipse, 10 Nairn Road was the second time the developer had opted for RBM over other waterproofing technologies.

I prefer RBM over the alternatives because the benefits of an RBM system far outweigh the negatives, and with the right management that follows Safe2Torch principles, it can be laid as safely as the alternatives,” says Shane, adding that self-adhesive technology has made RBM installation equally as safe as the alternatives when applying direct to timber.
